Umbilical cord of the cross

When a person is born, the umbilical cord is cut. Being in the mother's womb becomes a thing of the past.

God's birth among men is different. This birth began in Bethlehem and ended in Jerusalem. It began with flesh and blood and ended with the coming of the Holy Spirit. Only "ended" is inaccurate. "The end" does not mean parting with the Mother, nor with the childhood years, nor with that which one would most like to part with, the death on Calvary.

The cross was not simply "necessary" so that God on Himself would know the worst of what people experience and could say with a clear conscience, "My suffering is not lesser than yours."

The resurrection does not abolish the cross, nor does it make it a vintage decoration. Jesus is still on the cross. By this He is united to us, the people of today. God is eternal, and the suffering of the Son of God is eternal. He remembers what we forget willingly and gladly. This endlessness of His pain must be accepted, lest we repeat the fall into sin.
